Your Child's First Dental Visit - When to Go and How to Prepare

A child’s first visit to the dentist is certainly a milestone to celebrate and is a positive start to a lifetime of good dental health. According to the Australian Dental Association, children should visit a dentist when their first tooth becomes visible or when they reach their first birthday - whichever comes first.
If you are worried about how your child might react in a dentist's office, give the practice a call ahead of time to let them know about your child’s feelings towards seeing other health professionals as well as your current experience with encouraging them to brush.
‘We love when parents give us a call ahead of time to let us know about their child’s interests and preferences. Their favourite colours, TV show, characters… Little things like this help us make their first visit fun and engaging. Even bringing their favourite toy and their own toothbrush from home is a great way to make their first visit more comfortable!’ - Julie, Oral Health Therapist (My Dental Team - Wollongong).
During their visit, their dentist will address a variety of topics, which may include:
Teething
Brushing techniques
Bite (how the top and bottom teeth fit together)
Soft tissues such as gums and cheeks
Habits such as thumb sucking
Risk of decay and how to prevent it
Prevention of trauma to your child’s mouth
Nutritional advice
Dentists can also provide referral pathways to an orthodontist if they notice issues that can be addressed from a young age. Early orthodontic treatment is available for children between the ages of 8-10 years old. As the experts in straightening teeth and correcting problematic bites, your orthodontist will be able to identify and treat abnormalities earlier in your child’s life when their teeth and jaws are easier to manipulate.
The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) covers some or all of the cost of basic dental treatments over a two-year period for eligible children. Children aged between 0-17 years are eligible for Medicare and you receive Family Tax Benefit Part A or another relevant Australian Government payment. You can claim up to $1,026 for each child over 2 consecutive calendar years for each eligible child. Find out more
